Following the announcement of John Dramani Mahama as the 2024 presidential winner, Benjamin Gyewu-Appiah, a member of the NPP Communications team, has been the subject of intense public scrutiny. He now characterizes Gyewu-Appiah's earlier pledge to burn himself alive on live television if Mahama prevailed as a political exaggeration that shouldn't have been taken literally.
Gyewu-Appiah, speaking from an unidentified location, acknowledged that his comments were rash and extremely unfortunate. "I didn't intend to hurt myself. I said that because I believed my party would win, but it was merely political jargon. I apologize to my family, friends, and Ghanaians for the pain my comments have caused. The remark, which was made during a contentious political debate, swiftly gained widespread attention and was mocked and criticized, particularly after Mahama's victory was verified. An even larger backlash resulted from Ghanaians ridiculing Gyewu-Appiah on social media and doubting his ability to keep his word.
His personal life has suffered as a result of the scandal, the communicator said. "This has caused my wife, kids, and close friends needless suffering. I sincerely apologize and pledge to use my words more carefully going forward. Discussions in Ghana over proper political communication have been rekindled by the occurrence. Although some people have accepted his apology, others have criticized it as inadequate and demanded that political players take more responsibility. Gyewu-Appiah's story serves as a warning, emphasizing the value of balanced rhetoric in political debate, particularly in a democracy like Ghana.
