Alban Bagbin will not serve as Speaker of Parliament again in Ghana's 9th Parliament, according to Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). On social media, his statement has sparked intense debates. Haruna Mohammed asserts that the NPP is dedicated to making sure that its members make up the future Speaker of Parliament. In an interview with GHOne News, he made this audacious claim and underlined the party's willingness to seize important leadership roles in Parliament. He pointed out that this would make it easier for the NPP to advance its legislative agenda.
In January 2021, Alban Bagbin, a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), was elected Speaker of the 8th Parliament of Ghana. Following a tumultuous vote process that saw the NPP and the NDC split nearly evenly in terms of the number of legislative seats, his victory was extremely contentious. There have been multiple conflicts between the opposition NDC and the ruling NPP during Bagbin's time as Speaker. His leadership has been seen by many as a test of Ghana's democratic values and parliamentary independence, as he is the first Speaker to be elected from an opposition party.
According to Haruna Mohammed, the NPP is keen to change the balance of power in Parliament by gaining the Speakership. He maintained that a Speaker from the ruling party would facilitate governance and lessen the degree of political impasse that was evident in the 8th Parliament. The NPP's resolve to unseat Speaker Bagbin has sparked concerns about the party's ability to garner enough support to elect its chosen candidate.
