After making shocking accusations against Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, renowned Ghanaian journalist Okatakyie Afrifa has provoked popular indignation. Afrifa asserts that it has a leaked recording that links the Speaker to the misappropriation of GH¢12 million intended for Volta Region citizens impacted by the recent dam spill.
Afrifa called on the people of the Volta Region to seek accountability for the money purportedly intended to aid them during the catastrophic catastrophe in an appearance on Angel TV. Afrifa declared, "I want to share a very important secret with my brothers and sisters in the Volta Region." Since you are the ones who consistently vote for the NDC, the leadership ought to care for you, but sadly, they don't. I'm going to make public a leaked recording of Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, keeping a portion of the funds intended for the Volta Region residents impacted by the recent dam spill."
Afrifa also said, "GH¢12 million of the funds intended for the victims of this dam spill were retained by the Speaker. I'm stating this because I have hard proof, which I'll make public shortly. In order to find out why Speaker Bagbin is still holding onto your GH¢12 million, I am requesting that everyone in the Volta Region go ask him. Be courageous; go and ask him since it’s your money."


Thousands of people in the Volta Region were displaced by the dam disaster, leaving many of them destitute and in dire need of aid. To lessen the impact, the government and other parties had committed to providing substantial financial and logistical help. Afrifa's claims, however, raise serious concerns because they seem to point to possible theft of these monies. Afrifa has not yet made the alleged leaked tape public, but his allegations have already sparked a contentious discussion in political circles and on social media. To find the truth and guarantee accountability, some Ghanaians have demanded that the issue be looked into right away.
Speaker Bagbin has not yet addressed the accusations. Bagbin's party, the NDC, has also said nothing, casting doubt on the accuracy of the allegations and the possible effects on the party's standing in the Volta Region, a historical bastion.
The escalating scandal underscores the pressing need for accountability and transparency in the use of disaster relief monies, as Ghanaians await the release of the purported audio.
