The 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana has sworn in Alban Bagbin as its Speaker. Bagbin was sworn in by Chief Justice Gertrude Esaaba Torkornoo, who also administered the necessary oaths. Additionally elected are Andrew Amoako Asiamah, a member of parliament for Fomena who has served as the second deputy speaker of parliament since January 2021, and Bernard Ahiafor, a member of parliament for Akatsi South, who was chosen as the first deputy speaker. Bagbin's revolutionary leadership and remarkable career were highlighted by Majority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who formally recommended him for the Speaker position.
Mr. Bagbin's nomination was made with written consent and backed by a member's motion in compliance with Parliamentary Standing Orders 72 and 84. Dr. Forson highlighted Mr. Bagbin's important contribution to changing parliamentary governance while praising his broad experience as a lawyer, politician, and statesman. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, emphasized the Speaker's unparalleled expertise and leadership abilities when he seconded Mr. Bagbin's nomination. "With no other nominations for the position of Speaker, I hereby declare Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as the Speaker of the 9th Parliament," said Ebenezer Djietro, the Clerk to Parliament, following a lengthy discussion.
