Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) presidential candidate in the general elections of 2024, has urged President-elect John Dramani Mahama to summon the rioting National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters to order. Dr. Bawumia said that Mr. Mahama should be reminded that he has an obligation to help protect life and property because he has won an election and hasn't organized a coup. Following the NDC's victory in the recently concluded general elections, supporters of the party are accused of damaging state property and individuals thought to be NPP sympathizers.
For example, some of them broke into the Electoral Commission's Takoradi office to wreak havoc in the Western Region's Efia Constituency. "Many NDC members were arriving when we arrived; they were yelling, 'No Majeed, no peace,' and appeared irate. At first, they were unable to access the Electoral Commission office after breaking the glass door. Thankfully, no police was present at the office when they arrived, according to Edward Amoah, a staff member.
In response to these, Dr. Bawumia posted a statement on his Facebook page, saying that "H.E. John Dramani Mahama For the sake of maintaining national unity and peace, kindly call your supporters to order. I am deeply concerned about the shameful condition of lawlessness and thuggery that members of the National Democratic Congress are imposing on defenseless Ghanaians and government institutions.
In order to maintain national peace and unity, I would want to urge His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, the president-elect, to demonstrate statesmanship by controlling his followers. In numerous instances, NDC members have used offensive weapons to storm collation centers and declare NDC parliamentary candidates the winners of certain legislative elections. This, in our opinion, is inconsistent with the democratic culture that we are all attempting to foster.
"Mr. John Dramani Mahama and the NDC's lack of concern and quiet on the violence and mayhem being inflicted on NPP members and other individuals thought to be sympathizers also saddens me. In addition to robbing and stealing state property, these heinous acts of lawlessness and violence have spread to public offices and official institutions.
Some public offices were consequently compelled to close for business. In a bizarre turn of events, these savage behaviors are now being carried out on private residences and properties, and some people are even being threatened with death. It is unfortunate that these abhorrent actions are being carried out after an election that has been universally hailed as legitimate. The interests of the nation must always come before those of any one person. I want to remind President Mahama that he has not orchestrated a coup detat; rather, he has won an election. He has an obligation to help safeguard property and human life.
"I think President Mahama and the NDC are aware that if these acts persist, people will be forced to take reasonable measures to protect themselves," he continued. The last thing anyone wants is to ruin the splendor of the recently ended victorious elections. The NDC and Mr. Mahama ought to show that they are not hesitant Democrats.
