Dominic Ayine, the attorney general, has filed a notice to drop all charges against Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, the former second deputy governor of the Bank of Ghana, who has been on trial in two different cases involving the failure of UT Bank and UniBank. Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), signed a notice of withdrawal that was submitted to the trial court. It read as follows: Please take note that the prosecutor has withdrawn all charges and/or offenses against Johnson Asiama under sections 59(1), (2)(b)(ii), and (5) of the Criminal and Other Offences (Procedure) Act (1960), Act 30 at the next hearing of this suit, per the Honourable Attorney-General's instructions. Charges of fraud had been brought against Asiama and other defendants.
The former Second Deputy Governor was accused with UT Bank's failure together with five other people, including Prince Kofi Amoabeng, the bank's founder. Robert Kwesi Armah, Catherine Johnson, UT Holdings Ltd., and Raymond Amanfu were among the other defendants in that lawsuit. In the UniBank case, money laundering charges were also brought against former Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, his son Dr. Kwabena Duffuor II (who served as UniBank's CEO before to its demise), and other executives. Only Johnson Asiama is subject to the notice of withdrawal; the other accused individuals' trials are anticipated to continue.
