Members of the Council of Indigenous Business Associations (CIBA) in the Greater Accra Region (GAR) engaged in combat with more than 50 police officers, some of whom were reportedly armed and wearing masks, during a heated standoff that broke out at GICEL Estate.
A police operation to lock up stores and expel business owners was described by CIBA members as the cause of the altercation.
Shop owners were incensed when the authorities invaded the estate without warning or legal papers, according to witnesses.
The impacted company owners said that the operation was unlawful and urged President John Dramani Mahama and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to step in and prosecute the officials responsible.
Samuel Addo of Class FM interviewed a few irate CIBA members who described their experience.
"Without a court order or warning, the cops arrived early in the morning and began to lock up our stores.
One shop owner said, "Some of us were physically assaulted when we questioned their actions."
They also pleaded with the government to shield them from what they said were illegal security staff acts.
The Weija District Police Command has not responded to attempts to reach them thus far.
