According to reporting from Adomonline on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, former President John Agyekum Kufuor has voiced faith in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, referring to him as "a man of destiny" who is ready to guide Ghana into a happy future. Kufuor described his initial meeting with Dr. Bawumia at an international financial conference in 2003 in an interview on Asempa FM's Ekosii Sen program.
Bawumia had already made significant contributions to the country's financial industry and was a member of the Bank of Ghana's research team at the time. Bawumia's address left a lasting impression on Kufuor, who called it "very vital." He remembered, "I called him over and told him he had a bright future, even though I hadn't spoken to him before." When the position of Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana became available four years later, in 2007, Kufuor immediately suggested Bawumia for the position. "I immediately suggested Bawumia when the governor asked if I had someone in mind for the role, and he exceeded my expectations," he said.
Kufuor emphasized that Bawumia's accomplishments and experience in finance were so well-regarded that many in the industry thought he should stay in that industry instead of entering politics. Notwithstanding this, Kufuor fully supports Bawumia's choice to run alongside Nana Akufo-Addo as the vice presidential candidate. Ghanaians should support Bawumia's candidacy, Kufuor said, citing his honesty and commitment to public service. "A lot of what Bawumia has done reflects on his character. I think he's the best person to guide Ghana. He is capable and deserves the opportunity," he said.
