Alan Kyerematen, the leader of the Movement for Change, revealed that he intended to run against John Agyekum Kufour in 1996. He was urged, nevertheless, to change his mind about running against John Agyekum Kufour and other prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidates. Alan Kyerematen announced this while he was on Ezra Radio.
"I had planned to run against Kufour and others, but they brought individuals to me to change my mind after they saw that Alan Kyerematen could perhaps win. In his book, Appiah Menka said that Alan Kyerematen was the only guy who could have defeated Kufour. In my opinion, I couldn't have argued with him and anything. They even stood up to me in 1996 when I was about to be chosen as the Young Executive Forum candidate and begged me not to run. How come Kufour is now coming to discuss Bawumia? He knows Bawumia from where?
After failing to make an impression in the NPP's primaries, Alan Kyerematen departed the New Patriotic Party in 2024.
