Professor Stephen Adei, the former rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), has warned the incoming Mahama administration against dismissing Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornor, particularly when there is no justification for doing so. He says that if President-elect John Mahama dismisses the Chief Justice, Ghanaians will suffer greatly. Prof. Adei added that Mr. Mahama's decision to dismiss Jean Adukwei Mensa, the chair of the Electoral Commission (EC), will be terrible.
He stated, "It will be disastrous, he will be consolidating a very bad practice which will not augur well for Ghana's future, whereby every president basically appoints a new EC," during his appearance on TV3's Hot Issues on Sunday, December 22.We need to figure out how to keep our institutions intact. He went on to say, "We will pay a heavy price for it, not because of her but because of the system's underminers, if they remove the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court through political means and not because she has done something that calls for impeachment and goes through an impeachment process."
