Following its historic loss in Ghana's general elections of 2024, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is dealing with escalating internal strife. Party members are playing blame games amid the consequences, with prominent individuals accusing important officials of being responsible for the defeat (ghpage.com). President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, and prominent party member Gabby Otchere-Darko have all been publicly condemned by Hon. Eugene Boakye Antwi, the Member of Parliament for Subin. Antwi claims that the party's dismal polling performance was largely caused by their choices and management philosophies.
Discussions concerning the NPP's future leadership have also been rekindled in the wake of the election. Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kwabena Agyapong, Alan Kyerematen, and other notable individuals fought for the flagbearer post in the party's intense race ahead of the 2024 elections. He is a possible front-runner for the upcoming flagbearer race because of his strong commitment to accountability and his capacity to relate to regular Ghanaians (ghpage.com). The "Kennedy Agyapong for 2028" campaign posters that have been circulating the city indicate a grassroots effort to elevate him to the position of party leader. Those who watch
The NPP's capacity to resolve internal conflicts and restructure its leadership, according to observers, will be essential to its comeback. The party must bring its opposing factions together and restore member trust in light of the current tensions. Kennedy Agyapong's possible candidacy marks a sea change for the NPP as it plots its course. It is unclear if he will become the unifying force required to turn around the NPP, but his increasing popularity suggests that his leadership has the potential to change the course of the party in the future.
