On December 16, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, addressed the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) recent electoral defeat in Parliament with a forceful message. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) was chastised by him for celebrating what they perceived to be an NPP defeat. According to NAPO, it is inaccurate to say that the election results represent a total rejection of the NPP's programs and policies. He underlined that both houses of Parliament supported many of the decisions made during their administration.
With a composed yet forceful manner, he declared, "It is unfair and completely inaccurate to suggest that the NPP has been wholly rejected." He emphasized that the NPP's efforts were meant to help the nation and that bipartisan support was obtained for the majority of these projects. This viewpoint contradicts the narrative promoted by several opposition members who believe that the election results clearly reject the NPP's objectives.
Mynewsgh.com reports that the background of NAPO's comments follows the celebration of the election victory by John Dramani Mahama, the newly elected president, and his supporters. This triumph, according to many in the opposition, was a blatant sign that people disapproved of the NPP's policies. Nonetheless, NAPO advised his colleagues to prioritize practical government over party or personal victories. He emphasized the necessity for Parliament to put the needs of the country ahead of partisan gains. He said, "This house's business is not about individual wins or losses."The goal is to serve the country. As a result, we have already decided what this session's topics should be.His desire for cooperation in Parliament, particularly at a period of government change, is reflected in this statement.
In addition, NAPO questioned whether it was prudent to have controversial discussions at this time, particularly because the NDC has been tasked with taking the lead and "resetting" the nation. Perhaps it would be better, he said, to leave unsolved legislative issues for the next administration. He suggested that these issues be put on hold so that the new administration could implement the promises made to the populace. His appeal for empathy and collaboration comes at a critical juncture, as political tensions are high after the elections. Many think that in order to move forward, party disagreements must be put aside in favor of national objectives. NAPO is trying to create an atmosphere where all sides may cooperate for Ghana's improvement by supporting this strategy.
