The Ghanaian Electoral Commission (EC) has formally denied social media rumors about the outcome of the 2024 presidential election. The false report claimed that former President John Dramani Mahama received 57.7% of the vote, while Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia received 38.2%. The public became confused as a result of the widespread dissemination of these data, especially by opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) members.
The EC has responded by stating that the data that have been reported are not true. The EC's deputy chairperson, Dr. Bossman Asare, clarified that although the commission has documented the presidential election results, the figures in circulation do not correspond to the official information made public by the EC. He underlined that, in accordance with constitutional criteria, the commission only declares the candidate who receives more than 50% of the vote. Only the candidate with more than 50% of the vote is announced. In an interview with Fact-Check Ghana, Dr. Asare said, "Presidential elections do not provide detailed vote counts."
According to preliminary results provided by the EC on December 9, 2024, Dr. Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) received 41.66% of the vote, while John Mahama of the NDC received 56.55%. Since a number of constituencies have not yet finished the vote-collection process, these results are still tentative. Growing worries about disinformation during elections, particularly on social media, are reflected in the EC's statement. To prevent being duped by inaccurate and deceptive stories, the commission has asked the public to trust its official declarations.
