Early on January 2, 2025, a fire broke out in the Kantamanto market area, destroying at least 1,545 stores.
Kantamanto sources said that traders had previously been alerted to the possibility of an attack during Ghana's 2024 election season, which prompted preventative actions. "We even spoke with IGP Dampare to deploy police officers around the market to ensure safety after receiving information about an attack on the market just before we were set to cast our ballots. We thought the threat had passed after the elections," the person stated.
The report claims that the fire destroyed everything within a two-mile radius and peaked between 1:00 and 1:20 in the morning. I got a call about the market being on fire about 1:20 AM. The area was on fire when I got there, and numerous shops were turned to ashes. Shops deep within the market and along the roadway were destroyed by the fire. The fire's cause has not yet been determined. There are 1,545 numbered stores in the market, and they have all been demolished. The market also contains smaller stores, increasing the total to about 2,000, according to a source on yawanews.com.
Thirteen fire trucks were sent from all across Accra to put out the fire, which broke out close to the Ghana Commercial Bank, according to the Ghana National Fire Service. There have been no recorded casualties. In the end, firefighters were able to control the fire after confirming that they had made sure all of the traders were evacuated.
