In a startling admission, veteran journalist Abdul-Malik Kweku Baako revealed why he has consistently refused to cast a ballot for Ghana's National Democratic Congress (NDC). The Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide, who was speaking on Peace FM's Kokrokoo program, credited his position to the 1981 coup led by Jerry John Rawlings and the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), which overthrew Dr. Hilla Limann's government. According to Baako, the NDC is incompatible with his values because of its origins in the PNDC.
In the end, this party emerged from the PNDC, which deposed the Limann PNP. After the coup on June 4, we all agreed that there would never be another one. "I find it unbearable," Baako clarified. "John Mahama is my friend," he said, expressing his admiration for NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama but asserting that his ideological beliefs prohibit him from endorsing the party. I will not vote for him, even if he is like a brother. Not even my own corpse will cast a ballot for the NDC. Baako emphasized that history informs his choice. He described how, after the coup on June 4, 1979, the PNDC broke a pledge to maintain democratic administration.
Despite the administration's attempts to stabilize Ghana's faltering economy, Limann's People's National Party (PNP) was overthrown by the military junta in 1981. Later historical narratives support Baako's assertion that the coup halted development and solidified military rule in politics.
