A Presidential Delegation has been announced by U.S. President Joe Biden to attend Ghana's president-elect John Dramani Mahama's inauguration, which is set on January 7, 2025, in Accra. President Biden appointed Shalanda D. Young, Director of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, to lead the delegation, according to a White House statement.
Notable individuals on the delegation include: The United States Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia E. Palmer, has been instrumental in promoting the two countries' bilateral ties. The mayor of Los Angeles, California, Karen Bass, is well-known for her extensive involvement in U.S.-African relations. The administration's emphasis on African alliances is reflected in Frances Z. Brown, Senior Director for African Affairs in the White House National Security Council and Special Assistant to the President.
In the December 7, 2024, presidential election, incumbent Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia lost to John Dramani Mahama. After leading Ghana as president from 2012 to 2017, Mahama is making a comeback. The presence of the U.S. delegation highlights the significance of Ghana's democratic credentials and the long-standing alliance between the two countries.
