The recollection of contested election results in four constituencies—Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, Tema Central, and Techiman South—will be decided by an Accra High Court today. This is a major step forward for Ghana's election process.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) requested a hearing on purported irregularities in the 2020 parliamentary elections, which sparked the dispute. The Supreme Court recently overturned a previous decision that barred the NDC from participating in a mandamus application filed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) by voting 5-0 unanimously in favor of the NDC's ability to be heard. Demands for new elections in the contested constituencies have put pressure on the Electoral Commission to resolve these errors. Both parties' legal representatives have contested the results' legality, pointing to irregularities in the vote-collection process.
In the past, Judge Joseph Adu Owusu Agyeman ordered a recount in the Ablekuma North constituency in spite of the NDC's legal team's protests. The rising difficulties surrounding Ghana's electoral process and the judiciary's role in maintaining its integrity are highlighted by this ruling. The High Court's decision today may affect the balance of power in Ghana's legislature and change parliamentary representation. The decision, which will decide whether new elections or remembrances will settle the conflicts, is keenly anticipated by stakeholders.
