Shamima Muslim, the NDC's Manifesto Committee's spokesperson for gender and social protection, has criticized Alexander Afenyo-Markin, a member of parliament for Effutu, for referring to the NDC as "violent." Mr. Afenyo-Markin urged the NDC leadership to summon members to order in response to the recent altercations at collation centers and the looting and destruction of state property following the polls on December 7. Shamima Muslim reprimanded the MP for characterizing the party as violent in an interview with David Akuetteh of Luv FM in Kumasi, pointing out that the NDC had not been responsible for as many violent crimes as the NPP.
Given what you have done to Ghanaians, what could be more violent? What could be more violent than shoving old people to their deaths? Apart than stealing people's life savings, what could be more violent? When people who have worked for this country are shown crying on television and their businesses are destroyed, what could be more violent? "What?" she asked. Ms. Muslim went on: In your fight for control, what is more brutal than the violence we have witnessed in your own community? Is there anything more violent than the corruption you have defended? What could be more violent than the looting of state property that we have seen from their administration? They have to be more subdued. She points out that the NPP government has not understood that Ghanaians voted them out of office in part because of their "arrogance" and "intransigence."
In order to improve the nation, she urged the NPP to abandon their "arrogant stance" and embrace constructive criticism. "Afenyo-Markin has already begun to fling his hands around if they continue to act in a haughty and unyielding manner, as I have heard. Ghanaians try to explain it to them, but it still hasn't clicked. Some of them are putting on a front by criticizing, blaming, and speaking. According to Shamima, Afenyo-Markin is attempting to say, "call your violent party to order."
