The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former President John Dramani Mahama are allegedly responsible for planning attacks on a convoy that is carrying Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, according to Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The incident took place in Techiman and entailed the throwing of stones at busses carrying mourners to a burial in Nkoranza. Some passengers were injured and property was damaged as a result of the incident.
Chairman Wontumi said in a statement on his media outlet, Wontumi FM, that the incident was a purposeful political move meant to destabilize the area and cause instability. He implied that the NDC planned to cause political turmoil and weaken the NPP's base of support in advance of the national elections in 2024. Wontumi went on to assert that the opposition's efforts are a component of a larger plan to disturb the calm in crucial election districts. Even though there has been a lot of discussion about these claims, they have not been proven, and the NDC has not yet responded. Politically tense Techiman South has emerged as a focal location for debates about electoral violence and the necessity of increased security.
Although investigations have been started by local authorities, no arrests or findings have been made public as of yet. Stakeholders, including traditional elders, have urged all political actors to refrain from causing more turmoil and have appealed for unity and calm. Concerns about tribal violence in Ghana have increased as a result of the incident, underscoring the significance of preserving peace as the country prepares for elections. As the drama progresses, onlookers are closely monitoring any developments.
