Preliminary results for Ghana's 9th Parliament were released by the Electoral Commission (EC), showing that four independent candidates won seats, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) secured 183 seats, and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) claimed 88. With one seat separating them from a two-thirds majority, the NDC is now the majority party. Meanwhile, because of unsolved collation concerns, Ablekuma North results are still pending. A possible change in Ghana's political climate as the next session draws near is indicated by the parliamentary balance.
Worlasi Kpeli (Afram Plains North), Nandaya Yaw Stanley (Wulensi), Kwame Asare Obeng (Gomoa Central), and Ohene Kwame Frimpong (Asante Akim North) are the four independent contenders. Their triumphs highlight how independent voices are becoming more and more prominent in Ghanaian politics. In a hotly contested house, these candidates could have a significant impact on how decisions are made in parliament. However, the NDC's dominance indicates that the party has a strong mandate to spearhead legislative initiatives in the upcoming term. The NDC has disputed results from four constituencies, including Tema Central and Ablekuma North, claiming that the EC's collation procedure was defective in spite of these gains. Due to procedural flaws, the party has filed legal objections, including an appeal and stay of execution. The final parliamentary composition announcement is delayed by this argument.
The EC is under pressure to settle unresolved concerns as the 9th Parliament gets ready to meet on January 7, 2025. The ultimate balance of power will be decided by the outcome of ongoing legal proceedings and outcomes. In order to handle urgent national concerns and preserve its democratic values, Ghana is now awaiting a fully constituted Parliament.
