Kwame. The New Patriotic Party's (NPP) constitution has been heavily challenged by outgoing Asante Akim North MP Andy Appiah Kubi, who says it is outdated and has problems, particularly with the manner the party selects its leaders. The attorney made these statements during an interview that aired on TV3 on Saturday, December 28. He argued that the current constitution of the NPP does not include a more modern and effective process for selecting the party's leaders, which he believes is crucial to its success in the future.
"One major issue with the NPP's constitution is the method it chooses its leaders. A thorough rewrite was long overdue, according to Appiah Kubi, who voiced his concerns about the constitution's inability to adapt to modern society. Appiah Kubi made his comments shortly after NPP National Chairman Stephen Ntim conceded at a press conference that the party had lost the most recent elections to the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Ntim revealed that as part of the party's post-election review strategy, a special election review committee would be formed in January 2025. The committee will review the causes behind the NPP's electoral failure and interact with party stakeholders in order to implement measures that would improve the party's performance in future elections.
Despite the proposed changes, Appiah Kubi voiced concerns about the party's current leadership selection process, specifically its overemphasis on financial power. He insisted that the leadership selection process is skewed by the NPP's commercialization of it, making financial strength more important than competence. A more transparent and equitable process for choosing the NPP's leaders is what he advocated, cautioning that "monetization in the party will not lead to the best leadership choices."
