In a recent interview on the GTV Breakfast show, Mr. Freddie Blay, the former chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), suggested that the current maximum of 60 cabinet seats within the government be increased to between 90 and 100.
According to Mr. Blay, the small number of cabinet positions breeds jealousy among MPs, which could result in political instability and dissatisfaction within the party.
He also underlined how crucial it is to divide ministerial responsibilities more fairly among the many MPs in Parliament and across the different regions. He issued a warning, saying that if this isn't done, people who feel ignored or left out by the existing government may mutiny.
In order to distribute it among the areas, he said, "We need to go behind 60 and go to maybe 90 or 100."
The former NPP chairman went into further detail about the ramifications of this envy, pointing out that MPs who are not appointed to ministerial positions may lose faith in the party. A change of allegiance could result from this dissatisfaction, with some members possibly joining the opposition.
The delicate balance that must be maintained inside the party to promote unity and stability is highlighted by Blay's warning that "if you are not careful, they may themselves turn into opposition, join the opposition, to be attacking you."
Blay's suggestions regarding the ideal number of ministers required to run the nation could be examined as the political climate changes.
