Shop owners and traders are in shock following a disastrous fire outbreak at the Kantamanto market in the Greater Accra area. Tears, rage, and accusations have been directed at the fire that destroyed portions of the market. In their own words, the victims of the fire have accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of being behind the arson assault.
One victim claimed that the NDC had been sizing up the property where the market is located and had threatened to seize it if they were elected. According to the victim, the NDC sought to destroy the market because it was a bastion of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). "The NPP is trying to find a method to take this stronghold away from us. The victim claimed, "That's why they purposefully did this to us."
In a startling admission, another survivor claimed that the first fire ambulance to reach the site actually contributed to the fire's spread. The victim said that the fire was made worse by the water tank car spraying gasoline rather than water. "It burned more around the places where the water tank car sprayed. To make matters worse, we discovered that they had brought gasoline instead of water," the victim said.
