In the Ashanti Region, renal specialists and surgeons have successfully completed the first kidney transplant in the region, which is a major medical advance and gives those suffering from kidney illness fresh hope.

A man in his mid-forties who had battled renal illness for five years was spared by the historic treatment through a partnership between the renal Specialist Center and HopeXchange Medical Centre in Kumasi.

The patient sought advice from the center's medical specialists and decided to have a kidney transplant after receiving dialysis for around a year.

As the primary specialist for the procedure and a consulting nephrologist, Dr. Elliot Koranteng Tannor called the accomplishment a significant advancement. He revealed that future surgeries are anticipated to cost between $30,000 and $35,000, with the initial transplant costing about $25,000.

Dr. Tannor reassured kidney patients that his staff is dedicated to doing more transplants to enhance lives, and he encouraged them to hold onto their hope.

"This has come to stay here in Kumasi, and we are hoping it will continue," he said.

This milestone reduces dependency on dialysis and increases access to life-saving therapies, marking a significant achievement in renal care in Ghana.
