An Ash Ssangyong Istana public transportation vehicle, registered AS9845-22, narrowly avoided a possibly fatal robbery attempt in Atebubu, a town in Ghana's Bono East Region, when a group of unidentified gunmen attempted to stop the vehicle.
The horrific event happened as the car was passing through the crowded town when the armed attackers decided to try to halt it by shooting at it.
The attackers reportedly fired several rounds, striking the car's windscreen and bonnet, leaving the occupants terrified and in a panic.
Although no life-threatening injuries have been recorded, the shooting did injure a number of people.
In a stroke of luck, the driver remained calm and, despite the gunfire, managed to accelerate and speed away from the attackers.
This quick thinking likely saved the lives of the passengers on board.
As the vehicle sped off, the assailants failed to catch up, and the attack ended without the gunmen being able to successfully rob the passengers.
The incident has left residents in shock and raised concerns about the rising wave of criminal activity in the area.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the attack, though the identities of the gunmen remain unknown.
Atebubu, a key commercial hub in the Bono East Region, has witnessed its fair share of criminal activity in recent months, but this brazen daylight attack has drawn even more attention to the safety of commuters on the region’s roads.
