The exorbitant price of kenkey today has been bemoaned by John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress' (NDC) presidential candidate.
Kenkey used to be 50 pesewas and one cedi, but now it is 5 and 7 cedis, according to the NDC flagbearer.
According to John Mahama, a person like him would likely consume two or three Kenkey balls, which would cost 15 cedis if he consumed three.
In an interview with GTV presidential encounters, John Mahama said, "Today it is the opposite, the prices of all these things have gone up, petroleum has gone up, the currency is depreciating, and the price of Kenkey has gone up. It used to be 50 pesewas and 1 cedi, but now it is 5 cedis and 7 cedis, and for a person like me I probably might eat two balls or three balls."
John Mahama reaffirmed, "If I eat three kenkey balls today, which cost 15 cedis, and one fried fish costs 20 cedis, you are talking about 35-40 cedis just to have a meal of kenkey. If a person has to have three square meals, you are spending 35 cedis on each meal. You can imagine what the minimum wage is, it is far less, there is no way and that is a single individual not to mention the family."
The flagbearer of the NDC went on to say, "I can smell the wind of change coming. I can tell that Ghanaians appreciate what we did when we were in government. A lot of propaganda made Ghanaians say that life was hard and that we were managing things well."
