Following an Electoral Commission (EC) review of the results, Patrick Yaw Boamah, the member of parliament for Okaikwei Central, has formally been repositioned. With 21,099 votes, Boamah, who was running for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), defeated Baba Sadiq, a candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who received 19,368 votes.
This assurance comes after the EC was ordered by the High Court to finish compiling the results for a number of seats such as Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, Ablekuma North, and Techiman South by January 6, 2025. Earlier, following a series of challenges by NPP candidates, the court ordered the EC to complete the results, pushing the completion of incomplete collations.
Charles Forson of the NPP had already been proclaimed the victor with 18,870 votes, narrowly defeating Ebi Bright of the NDC, who received 18,815 votes, according to the Tema Central results. The total number of votes cast in Tema Central was 38,038 total, with 37,894 valid votes and 144 rejected ballots.
In the Okaikwei Central case, the court determined that the EC had not announced the results for all 141 polling stations, as only 110 stations had provided results. Judge Forson Agyapong, who oversaw the cases, decided that in order to make an accurate and comprehensive declaration, the missing results should be included in the final total.
The court’s ruling stemmed from mandamus applications filed by NPP candidates, which argued that the EC had failed to perform its public duty by not completing the collation process. Justice Agyapong emphasized that applicants must prove the failure to perform this duty had caused substantial prejudice.
His ruling ensures that all outstanding polling station results from Okaikwei Central, as well as from other affected constituencies, will now be included in the final declarations.
