As reported by GHOne TV last Saturday, a suspected gangster was taken into custody in Kpando, Volta Region, after he allegedly stole GHS 456,000 from a school principal on his way home.
At the end of last week, Headmaster Samuel Addo, who is in charge of Kpando Secondary School, was returning home when he was robbed.
Samuel Addo claims that when he was in his vehicle traveling down the Kpando-Aflao route, a gang of armed men stopped him.
The headmaster, who was clearly rattled, described the terrifying event.
It was intended for school improvement projects, but the bandits stole the money and ran off into the neighboring bush.
One local shopkeeper who witnessed the crime, Kwame Boateng, called it "terrifying."
The headmaster was being pulled out of his vehicle by a few armed men when I heard the car screeching to a stop. They were obviously chasing the money. "My fear prevented me from stepping in," Kwame clarified.
According to Afia Asamoah, another witness, the burglars were prompt and courteous.
They had a thorough understanding of their actions. Before anyone had a chance to respond, they stole the money.
Following the robbery, police in Kpando launched an investigation, which led to the arrest of Kwabena Ofori, a 32-year-old man suspected of being part of the gang.
Kwabena was arrested in a nearby village after a tip-off from local residents who recognized him from the incident.
Kwabena, known to have a history of criminal activities, denied being involved in the robbery but was found with a portion of the stolen money.
“We are still investigating his role in the robbery, but we are certain that he was involved. He was found with GHS 90,000 of the stolen amount,” said Inspector Nii Odai, the officer in charge of the case.
The robbery has left the community in shock, especially since Samuel Addo is well-respected for his role in education.
“I couldn’t believe it when I heard. Mr. Addo has done so much for the school. For this to happen to him, it’s heartbreaking,” said Emmanuel Tetteh, a local resident.
The police are still investigating the case and are working to arrest the other suspects involved. "We are determined to bring the rest of the gang to justice," Inspector Odai added.
Samuel Addo, meanwhile, is thankful to the police for their swift response, even as he recovers from the traumatic experience.
