A 40-year-old mason named Dosso John pleaded guilty to accusations of illegally possessing narcotic substances and carrying offensive weapons, and the Circuit Court in Dansoman sentenced him to GH¢6,000 in fines or, in default, eight years in prison.

On January 26, 2025, Her Honor Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit delivered the sentence.

During President John Dramani Mahama's inauguration on January 7, 2025, in Independence Square, Dosso was found guilty on two charges, including carrying offensive weapons and unlawfully possessing narcotic substances.

The charge of unlawful possession or control of narcotic narcotics entails a default punishment of five years in jail, and the presiding judge assessed 250 penalty units (GH¢3,000).

For carrying offensive weapons, he was also fined an additional 250 penalty units (GH¢3,000) and given a default sentence of three years in prison. The sentences must be read out simultaneously.

The prosecution dropped the initial accusation of stealing a Tecno Camon 301 phone worth GH¢3,500 from George Amadu, a landscape contractor, before to sentencing.

Before being remanded, he entered a guilty plea to the charges.

Details of the case

The incident happened at Independence Square during the packed inauguration celebration, according to the scant facts that were provided in court.

George Amadu, the complainant, claimed that the accused took his Tecno Camon 301 phone out of his back pocket and gave it to an accomplice, who is in the wild today.

When Amadu and the responding police officers seized Dosso, they discovered a kitchen knife concealed in his shirt during a search of his possessions.

Two rolls of alleged Indian hemp, a blade, two human teeth, a charm, and other objects were discovered when his backpack was further examined.

During questioning, Dosso was unable to offer any plausible justification for having these things. He was then charged and brought before the court to be arraigned.
