Born in Kumasi, Ghana, on November 12, 1970, Colonel Isaac Amponsah served as President Akufo-Addo's personal security guard and Aide-De-Camp (ADC). In January 2017, he succeeded Major General Bismark Onwona, who held the position until January 2023.
Prior to his appointment in February 2023, Colonel Amponsah dutifully taught at the Ghana Armed Forces' Defense Intelligence Unit and Military Training Academy.
He has held several positions, including Command Operations Officer, Southern Command, Ghana Army, and Director Operational Intelligence, Department of Defence Intelligence, General Headquarters, Ghana Armed Forces.
Accompanying them are the following: Akyem Akyiase, Platoon Commander (Op GONGONG), Course Commander/Acting Chief Training Officer, Ghana Military Academy, Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to the Chief of the Defence Staff, Ghana Armed Forces, Deputy Director Army Operations, Ghana Army Headquarters, Deputy Command Operations Officer, Northern Command, and Military Assistant to the ECOWAS Special Envoy to Liberia.
Peacekeeping In the field of peacekeeping, Colonel Amponsah has served as a Planning Officer and Military Liaison Officer at the UN Secretariat in New York.
Additionally, he held the positions of Platoon Commander, UNIFIL (Lebanon), Administrative Officer, UNIFIL (Lebanon), Military Liaison Officer, UNIOSIL (Sierra Leone), Deputy Commanding Officer/Chief Operations Officer, Ghana Battalion, MONUSCO (DR Congo), and Force Provost Marshal for UNOCI (Cote d’Ivoire).
Educational background
In terms of civil qualifications, Colonel Amponsah has a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Geography, Sociology from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, and a Master of Arts in International Affairs from the University of Ghana (LECIAD).
Colonel Amponsah earned a Master of Arts in Strategic Security Studies (Distinction) from the College of International Security Affairs at National Defense University in Washington, DC, USA, as part of his military education.
He received a Joint Campaign Planning and Integrated Peace Support Operations (IPSO) Course credential from the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Center.
The Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC) and Cranfield University have awarded him certificates in Conflict and Crisis Management and Defense Management, respectively.
Colonel Isaac Amponsah is a polyglot. He speaks English, French and Akan fluently and his hobbies are Gym, swimming, reading and listening to music and World News. He is married and blessed with two children.
