In a significant step toward addressing Obuasi’s evolving security needs, AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine introduced the Community Safety and Security Programme to augment the State’s effort to prevent and combat crime in the mining town.
AngloGold Ashanti launched its 10-year Socio-economic Development Plan in July 2022, and key to the plan was a firm commitment to construct and equip 3 police stations/ posts in Obuasi and its operational areas.
Before the plan, AngloGold Ashanti had donated 2 brand new Toyota hilux to the Obuasi Divisional and District Police command in 2019. Again, in 2023, the Mine also presented Toyota Hilux – 4WD DC DLX vehicle, worth GH¢ 453,500.00 to the Ashanti South Regional Police Command.
In fulfilment of their developmental blueprint, AngloGold Ashanti began the construction of a modern District Police Headquarters at Bidiem, a suburb of Obuasi Much to the delight and relief of the then Municipal Police Commander Chief Superintendent Elizabeth Viney.
The Police Command in Obuasi is housed in a structure built in Pre- colonial Ghana. This was considered a far cry of Obuasi’s status as a histroic mining town.
In February 2024, AngloGold Ashanti commissioned and handed over the modern, furnished Police station to the Ashanti South Regional Police commander DCOP Mr. George Ankomah in a colourful ceremony witnessed by the Member of Parliament for Obuasi Hon. Kwaku Kwarteng and some traditional leaders.
The company, again through Quantum LC, one of their contractors, presented Toyota Hilux to the Police to aid their operations.
A sneak peak into the magnificent structure revealed that it has interrogation rooms, male, female, and juvenile cells, a conference room, and dedicated offices for various units, each fully furnished.
This has indeed boosted the morale of the Police in Obuasi, the impetus needed for the Police to discharge their duties effectively, effortlessly, and responsibly.
A deep throat source in the Police confirmed to the SMS News that the police officers are comfortable in their new work environment, making them the envy of some of their colleagues.
Again, the new Police complex is believed to have critically contributed to a reduction in crime in Obuasi, especially during last year’s Christmas festivities.
Local content Policy
Kenzad Construction, an Obuasi-based construction firm, was given the contract to construct the Police station.
This is part of the local content policy of AngloGold Ashanti to build the capacity of local contractors to boost employment.
The contractor to vindicate the trust reposed in him delivered the project with great aplomb.
