The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chairman Wontumi, has reportedly arrested a close associate for allegedly plotting to set fire to local markets, according to a report by Joy News. Authorities in the Ashanti Region detained the individual, whose identity has not yet been revealed, after receiving intelligence regarding the purported conspiracy.
According to sources, an unidentified person allegedly hired the suspect to do the crime.
Police verified the arrest and reassured the public that investigations were still on in a statement to the media.
"A suspect connected to an Ashanti Region market burning scheme has been taken into custody. The spokeswoman said, "We are obtaining additional evidence to investigate this matter, and the suspect is presently in custody."
Many in the area are wondering why someone would commit such a risky crime, and the news of the arrest has shocked everyone.
Concerns were raised by locals and businesspeople who feared the terrible effects such an act may have had on their means of subsistence. Ama Serwaa was one trader who expressed her annoyance.

Known for his clout in the area, Chairman Wontumi has yet to remark on the incident. Nonetheless, some political observers think his reputation may be affected by this development.
One local, Kwame Yeboah, said he was disappointed.
"There are significant concerns when a political figure's close associate engages in such behavior. He said, "Leaders need to make sure their colleagues are honest. The public has received assurances from the police about their dedication to finding the truth and seeing that justice is done.
"Everyone is urged to maintain composure and let the police perform their job. The police spokeswoman further stated that anyone found guilty would be subject to the full power of the law.
