Online responses to images and videos showing Ghana's Inspector-General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare, directing traffic during President John Dramani Mahama's swearing-in have been conflicting. The IGP was observed standing among younger cops, helping to regulate the flow of automobiles at the high-profile event, while wearing his ceremonial police outfit.
Even though it's uncommon for someone in his position, the gesture has caused division among Ghanaians. Some praised his dedication and humility, while others pointed out that it was a deliberate maneuver to keep his job under the next administration.
On social media, someone wrote, "This cannot save you," "Dampare is only attempting to win Mahama over so he may continue to serve as IGP. But believe me, that will not work.
Speculation has been rife in recent weeks about Dampare’s future as IGP. Reports allege that he has been lobbying to secure his role, including seeking the intervention of influential figures like the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. These rumours have fueled skepticism about his actions, with critics labeling his visible presence at the event as strategic rather than selfless.
However, many Ghanaians disagree with such assertions, praising the IGP for his hands-on leadership style. "This is why we respect Dampare," another commenter wrote. "He is not afraid to get his hands dirty and lead by example. We need more leaders like him in Ghana."
Dampare’s tenure as IGP has been marked by reforms and a strong emphasis on community policing. His commitment to service has won him admirers, but the political climate surrounding such high-ranking appointments often subjects officials to intense scrutiny.
While the debate rages on, others have urged Ghanaians to focus on the bigger picture. “Whether Dampare is retained or not, what matters is that he has shown us that no position is too high for real work,” a veteran journalist noted.
As the dust settles on President Mahama’s inauguration, the fate of George Akuffo Dampare as IGP remains uncertain. But one thing is clear: his actions, whether viewed as strategic or genuine, have left a lasting impression on many.
