There’s nothing more terrifying than watching a home go up in flames. House fires have been a growing concern in Ghana, especially in urban areas where electrical faults, gas leaks, and unattended flames have led to tragic losses. But as Ghanaians, we are problem solvers. Across neighborhoods and online discussions, people are sharing ideas on how to prevent these disasters and protect their homes. Here are some of the best suggestions we’ve gathered from the community.
1. Fix Faulty Electrical Wiring
One of the most common causes of house fires in Ghana is electrical faults. Many homes have outdated or poorly installed wiring that can easily spark a fire. Kwame an electrician from Accra advises, If your house is over 10 years old, get a certified electrician to inspect the wiring. Fix any loose or exposed wires immediately.
2. Use Gas Cylinders Safely
Gas explosions are another major fire hazard. Akosua,a trader in Kumasi, emphasizes the importance of handling gas cylinders with care. Always keep your gas cylinder outside or in a well ventilated area. Check for leaks by applying soapy water to the hose and connections if you see there’s a leak.
3. Turn Off Appliances When Not in Use
Leaving electrical appliances on for long hours can cause overheating and eventually a fire. Nana Yaw, a university student suggests, Before you leave the house or go to bed, make it a habit to switch off all unnecessary appliances. It saves energy and prevents potential fires.
4. Be Careful with Open Flames
From cooking stoves to candles, open flames can quickly lead to a disaster if left unattended. Aunty Efua, a seamstress in Cape Coast shares, Never leave a burning stove unattended. If you have to step away, turn it off. Also, teach children not to play with matches or lighters.
5. Keep Fire Extinguishers at Home
In case of a small fire, having a fire extinguisher can make all the difference. Unfortunately, many households don’t have one. Kojo, a taxi driver in Tema, says, Fire extinguishers should be as common as first-aid kits in every home. They are not too expensive and they can save lives.
6. Educate Everyone in the Household
Fire safety isn’t just for adults. Children and house helps should also know what to do in case of an emergency. Have a fire drill with your family, suggests Afia, a teacher in Takoradi. Teach everyone how to escape safely and where to meet outside.
7. Call for Help Immediately
If a fire starts, acting fast is crucial. Don’t wait to see if you can control the fire yourself, warns Mensah, a security officer in Accra. Call the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) immediately by dialing 192.
The Way Forward
Fire outbreaks can be devastating, but with proper precautions, we can reduce their occurrence. By sharing knowledge and taking safety measures seriously, we can protect our homes and loved ones.
