The destruction of former president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's statue at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital roundabout has taken a dramatic turn, as activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor offers a bounty for the statue's severed head.
The FixTheCountry convener announced on his social media pages that he is willing to pay GHS 2,000 to anyone who can deliver the head of the statue to him "I am offering 2,000 cedis for anybody who brings me the head," Barker-Vormawor declared, sparking intense humour online.
This is the second attack on the monument since its unveiling in November 2024. The first occured in December last year when the statue's leg was damaged, prompting repairs. However, the latest incident has left the statue entirely toppled, with it's head lying severed on the ground
Uncertainty surrounds the cause of the demolition; some claim it was caused by political discontent, while others call it vandalism. But the bounty for Oliver Barker-Vormawor had given the continuing debates still another contentious dimension.
Supporters view Oliver Barker-Vormawor's offer as a symbolic protest against perceived government failure, while critics denounce it as offensive and rude. Although there were differing reactions to the statue when it was unveiled, the bounty announcement has further polarized views on it.
Oliver Barker-Vormawor's message has been viewed negatively by some, who have phoned the police to look into him. However, many people view it as a joke meant to make people laugh and relieve their stress.
