Angel Carbonu, the president of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), has recommended John Mahama that parents of senior high school students should cover their own housing and food expenses, according to the most recent Daily Graphic story. In order to make the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy sustainable, he says it needs to be evaluated.
Speaking on Okay FM on January 10, 2025, Mr. Carbonu clarified that although the Free SHS program has been helpful, its current form is not sustainable because to Ghana's economic difficulties. He stressed that one way to deal with some of the problems would be for parents to help pay for their kids' food and lodging.
An analogous statement has been made previously. The same was said by the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS). In light of food shortages, they asked parents to help schools by feeding their kids. Mr. Carbonu pointed out that because the government's food supply is insufficient, many students increasingly rely on their own funds and supplies.
He said that the government's reliance on the National Food Buffer Stock Company for food supplies causes operational disruptions because food deliveries to schools are delayed. Headmasters are no longer permitted to purchase food directly, he added, and bureaucratic procedures frequently cause delays in the delivery of monies to schools.
Mr. Carbonu suggested sending students home for a period while stakeholders talked about long-term fixes to these issues. A Minister of Education should be appointed immediately to oversee these talks, he added.
He asserts that in order to ensure the Free SHS program's effectiveness and long-term viability, openness and communication are essential.
