Key New Patriotic Party (NPP) figure Kennedy Agyapong has started national discussions about the government's economic report card as the nation gets closer to the eagerly anticipated December 7 elections in just eight days. For example, Agyapong said, "The truth must be told: You cannot go around thanking the NPP for changing the dollar from ₵4 to ₵12," in an interview with TV3's New Day show.
This is an uncommonly honest statement considering how much time most politicians spend blaming others and congratulating themselves. Agyapong acknowledged the NPP's failure to live up to its campaign promise to monitor the macroeconomy and lessen cedi movement. These and other statements illustrate how the NPP-led administration has caused Ghanaians to experience economic hardships and a greater political awakening.
Although some might characterize it as an accountability, others doubt that the remark is an extra-viral political ploy to bolster his voice ahead of the elections. Anyway, Agyapong's remarks are very different from the usual NPP rhetoric and highlight the party's unease as Ghanaian voters cast ballots. His integrity has brought leadership and accountability concerns back to life, as well as the Ghanaian economy's trajectory.
