Mussa Dankwah, a renowned analyst, has shed light on the demographics of New Patriotic Party (NPP) voters, highlighting the significant role of the Akan population in the party's support base. According to Dankwah, approximately 65% of the NPP's base consists of Akans, making them a crucial component of the party's support.
He emphasized that having an Akan base but selecting a candidate from a different ethnic group can lead to governance challenges. Some individuals support the NPP primarily because of their Akan heritage; therefore, if the party presents a candidate who is not Akan, it may struggle to garner enthusiasm and support from this demographic.
In an interview with Paul Adom Okyere, Dankwah shared insights from polling data, stating, "When we were polling, we observed that when you put an Akan candidate against Mahama, the gap between them shrinks significantly." He cited examples of Akan candidates who performed better against Mahama, including Kennedy Agyapong and Allan Kyeremanteng. Dankwah also mentioned that if NAPO were the candidate, the situation would have been even more challenging for the NPP.
