Renowned Ghanaian writer Kevin Ekow Taylor, who lives in the UK, has started a vital discussion on accountability in government by advocating for all of John Dramani Mahama's ministers to serve one-year probationary periods. Taylor underlined that when it comes to cabinet selections, performance and outcomes should take precedence over party allegiance.

Taylor wrote: "President JD Mahama, I would appreciate it if you would grant your ministers a one-year probationary period," in a direct message shared on X (previously Twitter). If someone doesn't deliver, they should be fired right away. Regards, sir. This audacious proposal has drawn a lot of attention and sparked conversations on how to guarantee an efficient and effect-driven government.

Public leaders, according to Taylor, should be held to high performance standards and provide measurable results. In a subsequent interview, he reminded everyone that there should be no space for complacency. The continuation of a minister should be prohibited if they fail to perform during the first year. Leaders need to be aware that government service entails accountability and quantifiable outcomes.

For other Ghanaians, the initiative has struck a chord because they believe it will help lessen political cronyism and favoritism. By making ministers answerable for their actions, the strategy might promote the appointment of qualified candidates who can propel the country forward.

For Taylor, the idea of a probationary period represents a way to instill discipline, efficiency, and accountability within the administration. It also sets a clear standard that leadership positions are contingent upon delivering meaningful results for the people of Ghana.
