Ghanaian social media personality Twene Jonas has expressed his disapproval of the current status of U.S. immigration laws, especially during the term of former President Donald Trump, according to Yen. In an open video that he shared on social media, Jonas expressed his reluctance to leave the country because he fears becoming entangled in deportation practices that target green card holders.
For immigrants, particularly those with legal status who are still susceptible to abrupt changes in immigration regulations, Jonas emphasized that the continuous deportations under Trump's administration have caused a sense of unpredictability and insecurity. Despite having a green card, he made it clear that he is reluctant to travel because he fears being deported.
Jonas stated in the video, "Like me, many green card holders live in constant fear." You're not sure when you'll be affected by the next round of deportations. I don't want the life I've worked so hard to create here to be ripped away for uncontrollable reasons."
Given the growing uncertainty faced by many people in the United States on green cards or other visas, particularly due to measures implemented during the Trump administration, his remarks are relevant to a larger discussion of immigrant rights.
Jonas went on to criticize the U.S. government’s treatment of immigrants, suggesting that the legal climate has made it difficult for many to feel secure in their efforts to contribute to the country. He also expressed frustration with the way immigrants have been treated during this period, calling for more stable and compassionate immigration policies.
"People come here with hopes and dreams, only to find themselves constantly under threat of being sent back home for no reason," Jonas added.
The influencer's video has sparked a range of reactions online. Some followers have shown support for Jonas’s stance, agreeing with his concerns about the fragile legal protections for immigrants. Others, however, have criticized his viewpoint, with some accusing him of focusing too much on personal fear rather than the broader issues at hand.
