The police officer who attacked DSP Nanka Bruce at the Jubilee House in January 2017 during the Akufo-Addo administration should be investigated and punished, according to security expert Dr. Adam Bona, who has urged on the Mahama administration to do so.
Director in charge of VVIP at the time, DSP Nanka Bruce, was viciously attacked by ASP Jalil Bawa in the Flagstaff House. People were incensed after a surveillance footage of the attack went viral on social media.
The case appears to have vanished from the public consciousness despite being brought up in Parliament by Ras Mubarak, the Kumbungu MP at the time, because the Attorney General's office was not interested in pursuing prosecution.
Mr. Speaker, I am aware of a report that was submitted on January 9, 2017, by DSP Nanka Bruce, the Director in charge of the VVIP at Flagstaff House, stating that he had been assaulted by an Abu and an ex-policeman named Jalil [Bawa]. Ras Mubarak said in Parliament at the time, "The Police CID is currently investigating the matter and works to get the suspects arrested."
In a Monday, January 6, 2024, Metro TV comment, Dr. Bona criticized the state for not punishing ASP Jalil, claiming that this has given him the confidence to act without consequence.
Dr. Bona said, "I expect the Mahama government to deal with the hoodlums who took over and assaulted other people at the Jubilee House. Someone like ASP Jalil attacked a police officer named DSP Nanka Bruce at the Jubilee House and beat him up like an animal, and went to his home and beat him up, and this happened under the purported human rights activist president. No one punished this ASP, and he is still in uniform."
When the incident occurred, ASP Jalil Bawa was no longer employed by the Ghana Police Service. He then rose to prominence as a member of the NPP's private security unit, also referred to as the Invisible Forces.
Following the NPP's takeover of power, the Akufo-Addo administration restored ASP Jalil to the police force and recommended that he enroll in the police school in order to become an officer.
