Last night, a huge fire struck Tamale's Aboabo Market, destroying sellers' wares and turning them to ashes.
Early in the evening, the fire quickly spread to multiple stalls before firefighters could put it out. A Northern Regional Command firefighter disclosed that the Ghana Water Company had turned off their hydrant, making it difficult to extinguish the fire.
Despite sending four fire tenders to the area, the dearth of water made their work essentially futile, which made the damage worse.
The incident has rekindled discussions about the need for enhanced collaboration between water utility companies and the Ghana National incident Service, as well as increased disaster preparedness.
Since many traders have lost their jobs overnight, those impacted by the tragedy have urged authorities for immediate assistance.
The experience emphasizes how important it is to have infrastructure and resources for combating fires that are sustainable in order to stop catastrophes like this one from happening again.
