The Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has revealed a significant meeting with Ghana’s longest-serving Foreign Minister, Dr. Obed Yao Asamoah.

Hon. Ablakwa made this known in a post shared on his Facebook page on January 25, 2025. In his post, he expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to meet and consult with the statesman.

“It has been a genuinely great honor visiting and consulting with Dr. Obed Yao Asamoah, Ghana’s longest-serving Foreign Minister,” he wrote.

Dr. Obed Yao Asamoah, who is now 89 years old, served as Ghana’s Foreign Minister for an impressive 16 years, from 1981 to 1997, during the tenure of President Jerry John Rawlings. Notably, he also held the dual role of Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, a testament to his exceptional dedication and capabilities.

Hon. Ablakwa further noted his deep appreciation for Dr. Asamoah's generosity and wisdom during their meeting. “I am extremely grateful to the extraordinary statesman and member of the NDC’s Council of Elders for receiving me in his home today; for his kind encouragement; for his blessings; for his generous insights; and for his perspectives, which was a masterclass,” he shared.

The veteran diplomat also expressed confidence in President John Dramani Mahama’s foreign policy objectives, adding an optimistic note to their discussion.

This consultation comes in the wake of Hon. Ablakwa’s recent nomination by President Mahama on January 21, 2025, to serve as Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs. His meeting with Dr. Asamoah reflects his commitment to learning from the wealth of experience and knowledge of Ghana’s seasoned diplomats as he prepares to assume this significant role.

Hon. Ablakwa’s gesture highlights the importance of honoring the contributions of past leaders while building on their legacies to advance Ghana’s foreign relations and diplomacy.
