Although the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has ruled that the contentious National Cathedral project is unlawful, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu has expressed concerns regarding salary payments to its employees.
The project secretariat got salary payments in December that ranged from GH¢20,000 to GH¢29,000 each, according to Ablakwa's lengthy statement on Facebook on January 4, 2025, which included payment records that his organization had intercepted.
The outgoing Akufo-Addo-led administration came under fire from Ablakwa for continuing with payments in spite of the nation's economic difficulties, which put a strain on the state budget.
This was taking place, he added, in spite of CHRAJ's recommendation to bring charges against project executives. The infamously wasteful National Cathedral Secretariat's employees received their December salaries, which ranged from GHS20,721.00 to GHS29,838.00 each, just four days ago, according to intercepted payment documents (see evidence attached). "Shockingly, these fat salaries continue to be paid by the outgoing, intransigent Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration, despite a November CHRAJ report declaring the cathedral project illegal and recommending the prosecution of officials associated with that unlawful enterprise," he said on Twitter.
