A longtime member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has claimed that well-known broadcaster Dr. Randy Abbey once backed and worked for the party.
There were procedures in place to make that happen, he said, and Dr. Abbey was once thought to be the party's parliamentary candidate for an unspecified constituency.
Dr. Abbey's political affiliation changed over time, according to Gabby, who said these things in a parting message to the presenter as he departed Metro TV after more than two decades there.
Additionally, he mentioned that Dr. Abbey once expressed his admiration for National Democratic Congress (NDC) President John Dramani Mahama while he was employed by the NPP.
“Within the 23 years, we saw some transformation with Randy. Because Randy was very pro-NPP in the beginning. And I remember he was even being drafted to stand for Parliament. And I think even in 2008, I used to do a lot of work for the NPP with Danquah Institute’s communications. Randy was part of us.
“And I remember him saying at that time that, ‘It would be difficult for me if John Mahama becomes president because he is a very good friend of mine, and I'm very close to Ibrahim Mahama.’ He always said that, even in those days when he was part of our communication strategy team. Not outwardly, but we had a group that used to work together and plan for the NPP,” Gabby said.
He added, “And even when John Mahama became vice president, he still used to go on Peace FM. He was more pro-NPP, but he was always a bit… fair to the facts. I think that was one of his strengths.”
Dr. Randy Abbey is speculated to be in line for an appointment by President John Dramani Mahama.
