Tensions in the media have been rekindled by Ghanaian-American journalist Kelvin Taylor in the wake of John Dramani Mahama's victory in the general election of 2024. Taylor, who is well-known for his audacious and frequently contentious remarks, issued a severe warning to critics and media figures who, in his words, disparaged him prior to the elections.

Taylor named Okatakyie Afrifa, a well-known broadcaster and activist in Ghana, as one of his main targets in a public speech that has subsequently generated debate. He said he would not allow Afrifa and others to get away with unfairly disparaging his character during the contentious campaign season.

As Taylor put it, "Tell Okatakyie Afrifa to be prepared. Whoever made disparaging remarks about me, prepare. The reason for this is that I will not pardon you. If you spent ten minutes talking about myself, I would do the same for ten minutes about you. I'd do the same if you spent five minutes spreading rumors about me. Thus, they ought to be fully prepared. Don't assume that I've forgotten how they came upon me. Never will I forget. You should go ask Mr. S and Mr. P. Since Mahama's victory, I have maintained my position that we will pursue Okatakyie Afrifa.

Ghanaians' reactions to the announcement have been divided, with some voicing worries about rising tensions in the media. While some contend that Taylor has the right to defend his reputation, others think that such combative language runs the risk of widening rifts and diverting attention away from the country's togetherness following a divisive election season.

Despite being a strong critic of Taylor, Okatakyie Afrifa has not yet publicly addressed the warning. Nevertheless, some of his followers have urged media personalities to put professionally before of personal conflicts and have advocated for maturity and caution when resolving disagreements.

Many expect a revitalized sense of national unity as Ghana changes under Mahama's leadership. But observers are concerned that such fights could divert attention from more important national concerns.

For now, Kelvin Taylor's comments remain a stark reminder of the intense rivalries that characterized the 2024 elections, leaving Ghanaians to wonder if the dust from this political storm will ever truly settle.
