Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari, the Overlord of Dagbon, has ordered the offices of St. Vicente Nursing College to close after a disagreement over the choice of the college's new principal. A candidate other than the one suggested by the King was selected by the college's board, which led to this conclusion.
When the college's previous principal retired, a position for a replacement was created, which led to the issue. Although Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari put forward a candidate for the position, the board ultimately chose someone else. The Overlord's agents claim that this decision was taken without seeking advice from the King or following his advice.
The college's administration and employees were ordered to leave the campus and lock the offices until further notice by Alhassan Abdul Fataw, the Registrar of the Dagbon Traditional Council. The institution should be temporarily closed because the board's decision to ignore the King's order was disrespectful, Fataw underlined.
He added that no Dagomba has ever been named principal of the college since its founding. Prior to learning that interviews were being conducted for the role, the King was unaware of the opening. In order to prevent the perception that the school was against Dagomba representation, the King called a meeting of the board, including the chairman, and asked them to think about adding a local candidate. However, the current instability is a result of the King's wish not being fulfilled.
In reaction to the board's actions, Yendi's youth organized and called for the college to be closed until a solution could be found. It is believed that the closure is a first step in resolving the conflict in a way that both parties can agree with.
