Osibisa star Teddy Osei, a well-known Ghanaian musician, passed away at the age of 88.
On Tuesday, January 14, 2025, the regrettable incident took place in London.
The tragic news was confirmed to Citi News by Bessa Simons, president of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), who described Teddy Osei's passing as the loss of one of Ghana's greatest musical icons.
Co-founder of Osibisa in 1969, Teddy Osei was well-known for fusing rock, highlife, and Afrobeat to produce a sound that was recognized throughout the world.
He was born in Kumasi in December 1937, and his early exposure to musical instruments marked the beginning of his musical career.
He tried to start a band with pals while he was a college student in Sekondi after discovering his love for music and learning to play the saxophone.
It is interesting to note that he picked up the instrument because the original saxophonist was unable to show up for practice.
Teddy developed his artistic abilities by practicing by playing along to jazz records.
Osei had a brief stint as a construction inspector after graduating from college before starting his first band, The Comets, which was a moderate success.
He received a government grant to study acting and music in London in 1962. He was compelled to abandon the program after three years, nevertheless, due to political shifts in Ghana.
