President John Dramani Mahama formally swore in the members of the Constitutional Review Committee at the Jubilee House in Accra on Thursday, January 30, 2025. The former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Charlotte Osei, was one of the appointees. Her inclusion has drawn notice because of her contentious dismissal in 2018.

Osei was mentioned by President Mahama during the ceremony when he said, "Good to see my dismissed Electoral Commissioner." The country was divided over her termination under former President Nana Akufo-Addo, which was based on accusations of wrongdoing.

It is the responsibility of the recently established committee to examine the Constitution and pinpoint possible reform areas. Its aim is to guarantee that the Constitution adjusts to the nation's evolving requirements. Various groups will be consulted by the committee in order to do this, including:

1. Legal Experts – To ensure legal soundness in proposed reforms.

2. Political Leaders – To gather diverse political perspectives.

3. Civil Society Groups – To ensure the reforms address the needs of the general public.

The committee is chaired by Professor H. Kwasi Prempeh, the Executive Director of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana). Other members include:

1. Justice Sophia Adinyirah

2. Prof. Kwame Karikari

3. Mrs. Charlotte Osei

4. Dr. Godwin Djokoto

5. Ibrahim Tanko Amidu

6. Dr. Esi Ansah

7. Dr. Rainer Akumperigeya (Secretary)

President Mahama expressed confidence in the committee’s ability to strengthen Ghana’s democracy. He highlighted that the Constitution must evolve to meet the nation’s growing demands.

The committee has been given five months to complete its review and submit recommendations for potential constitutional changes in Ghana.
