The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has raised concern over a surge in online fraud, with financial losses soaring to GH₵4.4 million between January and March 2025—a sharp increase from GH₵2.4 million recorded in the same period in 2024.
So far, 350 cyber fraud cases have been reported, as scammers exploit digital platforms to target unsuspecting victims.
Festive Seasons Targeted by Cybercriminals
With the Eid celebrations ongoing and Easter approaching, the CSA has warned that cybercriminals intensify their activities during such peak shopping periods. The Authority highlighted three major fraud tactics used:
Fake Online Shops: Fraudsters create counterfeit stores on social media, offering discounted products that victims pay for but never receive.
Brand Impersonation: Scammers manipulate search results to display fake business listings, tricking customers into engaging with fraudulent contacts.
Phishing Scams: Deceptive emails and messages posing as businesses, romantic partners, or retailers lure victims into clicking malicious links, leading to data theft or malware infections.

How to Stay Safe
The CSA has advised consumers to take precautionary measures while shopping online:
✅ Verify Online Retailers: Use trusted platforms and check reviews before making purchases.
✅ Avoid Advance Payments: Pay only after receiving the item and ensure mobile money transactions go to verified business accounts.
✅ Beware of Too-Good-To-Be-True Deals: Unsolicited massive discounts could be scams.
✅ Protect Personal Information: Never share Ghana Card details, bank account numbers, or passwords with unknown sources.

The CSA urges the public to report suspected cyber fraud incidents via its 24-hour helpline:
